2026 is shaping up to be another excellent year for the stock market.
At a meeting that’s become the center of the tech universe, nerdy researchers partied on yachts and gathered on rooftops to trade gossip and compare notes. Everyone was feeling bubbly.
STORY: U.S. stocks closed higher Friday with the Dow rising about four-tenths of one percent, the S&P 500 advancing roughly nine tenths and the Nasdaq climbing one point three percent.Technology stocks extended gains from Thursday, helping the S&P 500 and Nasdaq finish the week higher.Chipmaker Micron Technology's strong forecasts re-ignited optimism around AI-related shares, which had recently come under pressure over lofty valuations and funding concerns.Micron shares rose 7% to reach a record high on Friday and Nvidia added roughly four percent as the U.S. launched a review that could allow the first shipments to China of Nvidia’s second-most powerful AI chip.Anna Rathbun, founder and CEO of Grenadilla Advisory, says she understands the day-to-day focus on these companies and their stocks as they continue to shovel billions of dollars into data centers, but she encourages investors to have a much longer time horizon."Now, the markets are asking to see some of that return on investment. I don't think we're going to see that for a while because I think the runway to AI and getting all the way to AI actually being relevant in our lives, day-to-day lives, is a little bit further out. The "all-in" bet on OpenAI is among the biggest yet by SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, as the Japanese billionaire seeks to improve his firm's position in the race for artificial intelligence. To come up with the money, Son has already sold SoftBank's entire $5.8 billion stake in AI chip leader Nvidia, offloaded $4.8 billion of its T-Mobile US stake, and slashed staff.
In recent days, Alibaba Group Holding has accelerated its push into artificial intelligence and instant commerce, from seeking access to Nvidia’s newly approved H200 chips for China to expanding Cainiao–Tmall Supermarket fulfilment so that Taobao Shangou orders can arrive in as little as four hours across 31 mainland cities. At the same time, Alibaba’s open-source Qwen models gaining traction with partners like Meta and its rising AI-related cloud revenues highlight how the company is trying...
